hainan dao. december 2006

I'm back from the simple life. And I survived 3 nights in my ancestral village in Hainan Dao, other than the 5 days touring Haikou & Sanya. It was a great trip and i'm so glad i went! My whole village experience was extremely charming and endearing, complete with having to squat next to the toilet to brush teeth and rinse from a plastic scoop cos there're just no washbasins... As always, a picture says a thousand words...

breakfast at 6am - different types of man tou and dough sticks

relative - one of the many old folks i met who knew me by name and greeted me enthusiastically. its simply heartwarming.

'buah' - traditional sticky cake skilfully sliced with a piece of thread

courtyard conference - a common sight throughout the day; old folks gathering in the courtyard chatting away.

'boh gu' - the family cow, who saunters off to the meadows every morning and returns in the evening. sometimes the neighbour's mother pig will roam into the backyard, only to be chased away before i can take a picture.

alfresco dining - its pretty dark so its kinda hard to see what you're eating but nevertheless it was very nice!

kitchen - it is that dark with only the glow from a single light bulb strategically placed over the stove.

courtyard - empty! where has everyone gone?

main hall - it may look spartan but it has all the family warmth it needs with all my relatives congregating in here and catching up with each other two days before my nephew's wedding.

bedroom - two to a bed, four to a room. the beds are hard but i can sleep pretty much anywhere so i had a good night's sleep on all 3 nights.

idle - outside our bedroom, waiting for the wedding to start

wedding - my nephew, who's a year older than me, on his wedding day

wedding lunch - its very 're nao' (lively) and red plastic bags are distributed for guests to 'ta pau' the leftovers.

hotel wedding dinner - all the 16 dishes arrive within 5 min of the 1st dish and the waiters just pile them one on top of another. When it came to the fruits they couldn't find space and asked us where they should leave it, ha ha... the whole wedding dinner was done in one hour!

old world charm - old ladies wear hats to protect their heads from the night dew. i was kinda afraid this old lady would suddenly lift her stick to hit me for taking her picture.

wayang - guests & neighbours were treated to an authentic open-air wayang just outside the house. its really cute to see them lifting up their stools and heading home when the show ended. i sat through some 2 hrs of the show with help from my aunt to translate the dialogues.

grand-niece - my 28 yr old niece's 4 year old daughter who addresses me as Mai Por , meaning Grandaunt... i'm that old.

firecracker - seeing it fire away live for the first time, its pretty deafening!

one for the album - customary extended family picture outside the ancestral village home
